Signal of Quark Deconfinement in Millisecond Pulsars and Reconfinement in Accreting X-ray Neutron Stars

چکیده
Theoretically, the phase transition between the confined and deconfined phases of quarks can have a remarkable effect on the spin properties of millisecond pulsars and on the spin distribution of the population of x-ray neutron stars in lowmass binaries. In the latter class of stars, the effect has already been observed—a strong clustering in the population in a narrow band of spins. The observed clustering cannot presently be uniquely assigned to the phase transition as cause. However, there is another possible signal—not so far observed—in millisecond pulsars that we also discuss which would have the same origin, and whose discovery would tend to confirm the interpretation in terms of a phase transition in the stellar core.

Accreting X-ray Millisecond Pulsars Observed with Integral
I review the properties of three X-ray accreting millisecond pulsars observed with INTEGRAL. Out of seven recently discovered accretion-powered pulsars (one discovered by INTEGRAL), three were observed with the INTEGRAL satellite up to 300 keV. Detailed timing and spectral results will be presented, including data obtained during the most recent outburst of the pulsar HETE J1900.1-2455. Accreti...
متن کاملWhat Makes an Accretion-Powered Millisecond Pulsar?
We investigate the dependence of pulse amplitudes of accreting millisecond pulsars on the masses of the neutron stars. Because the pulsation amplitudes are suppressed as the neutron stars become more massive, the probability of detection of pulsations decreases in systems that have been accreting for a long time. However, the probability of detectable pulsations is higher in transient systems w...
متن کاملTwo possible approaches to form sub-millisecond pulsars
Pulsars have been recognized as normal neutron stars or quark stars. Submillisecond pulsars, if detected, would play an essential and important role in distinguishing quark stars from neutron stars. A key question is how sub-millisecond pulsars could be formed. Both sub-Keplerian (for neutron and quark stars) and super-Keplerian cases (only for quark stars, which are bound additionaly by strong...
متن کاملMapping the QCD Phase Transition with Accreting Compact Stars
We discuss an idea for how accreting millisecond pulsars could contribute to the understanding of the QCD phase transition in the high-density nuclear matter equation of state (EoS). It is based on two ingredients, the first one being a “phase diagram” of rapidly rotating compact star configurations in the plane of spin frequency and mass, determined with state-of-the-art hybrid equations of st...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
